Government launches broadband for children initiative

January 9, 2016

As part of its drive to improve education standards, the Government is developing plans to ensure that all children in the UK have access to broadband at home.

According to the Department for Children, Schools and Family, currently over one million children do not have access to a broadband connection at home. The government wants home IT to become part of the essential kit for all schoolchildren.

The Government recognises that not all families can afford broadband, and is planning talks with major IT firms, such as Microsoft and BT, about developing affordable schemes. It will also talk to suppliers about bringing down the cost of IT equipment.

Under the plan, parents will have online access to reports on their child’s progress and behaviour.

The Government has set up a Home Access Task Force which will publish a report on its findings in April.
